What Play actually checks

Most listing rejections are not judgement calls. They are hard limits that Play Console enforces on upload, and almost all of them are invisible until the moment you are blocked.

Text limits

App name is capped at 30 characters, short description at 80, and full description at 4,000. These count characters as a person would — an emoji is one character, not two — and going over is a hard rejection rather than a silent trim.

The name is not the same as the name people see

Your 30-character name fits on the listing page. It does not fit in a search result row, which is much narrower and ends in an ellipsis. Anything past roughly the first twenty characters is decoration. Put the distinguishing word early.

The feature graphic cannot be transparent

1024 × 500, JPG or 24-bit PNG. Exporting a PNG with an alpha channel — which most design tools do by default — gets it rejected, and the error message is not especially clear about why. This tool inspects the actual pixels and tells you before you upload.

Screenshots

Between two and eight phone screenshots, each side between 320px and 3840px, and no wider than a 2:1 ratio. Two is the minimum to publish, but the first two are what appear without scrolling, so treat those as the ones that matter.

Icon

Exactly 512 × 512 PNG. This is the Play Store icon, uploaded in Console. It is a different asset from the launcher icon bundled in your APK, and it is not masked, so what you upload is what people see.

Questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. There is no backend. Images are read and measured locally in your browser, and the transparency check reads pixels on a canvas on your own machine.

Is this an official Google tool?

No. It is an independent preview built to match Play's published requirements. The rendering is a close approximation of the real store, not a pixel-exact copy, and Play's own layout changes over time. Always confirm in Play Console before release.

Why does my name look fine here but truncated on my phone?

Search result width varies with device and font size. The preview uses a typical phone width, so treat truncation shown here as a warning rather than an exact cut point.

Does it check my full description formatting?

It checks length only. Play allows limited HTML in the full description, and the rules for that change; the character count is the part that reliably blocks a release.
